If you’re looking for one special thing you can do that will magically fill the hole that sometimes feels like a gaping maw at the center of your soul, you’re not going to find it. That hole is not a bug, it’s a feature. It will never be filled. To quote the excellent musical, Hamilton, You will never be satisfied.

Oh sure, you’ll find something that helps for a little while — some panacea that tickles just the right way and makes you think you’ve silenced the beast. For some people it’s drugs, for others it’s sex. For some it’s making other people feel worthless. There are plenty of addictive activities out there for you if you just want to dull the pain.

But soon, and it’s always soon, you’ll start to feel the gnaw again — like whispers at the edge of your awareness that slowly get louder and louder until you want to scream just to cover the sound.

And what do the whispers say?

Go. Do. Explore. Find. Search. Love. Fight.

You’re sitting at the base of a family tree filled with a long line of explorers, warriors, farmers, toilers. You’ve got the blood of royalty and the DNA of rebels and upstarts.

Humanity started with sticks and stones and got to iPads and smart cars.

You want to know why you’re dissatisfied with your life? It’s because life is dissatisfying. Being human is about being dissatisfied and then going out and doing something about it. You want to know your purpose? Your purpose is to question why you are here. You don’t get to know about what difference you’ll make until long after you’ve made it, so don’t worry about it.

Just get off your butt and do something.

Are you a writer? Then stop making excuses. Sit down and write. Not tomorrow, today. Not later.
